The 22-year-old netted his first Serie A goal of the season last weekend at Verona and quickly followed that up with a strike against Atalanta in the midweek Coppa Italia win.

“And it was about time,” Insigne has mused on the upturn in fortune, in today’s edition of the Corriere dello Sport.

“I do not even remember the number of times I hit the woodwork, perhaps four or five, as well as the other night against Atalanta…

“It was not going well for me before, now it is going pretty well. But I always believed.

“Was I downbeat before? I did not know what I had to do, I thought that fate had decided to turn against me – shots that went just a little wide, finishing that was not as I had intended, errors in front of goal.

“You know, at some point you also begin to wonder what is going on.

“Benitez’s calmness has been reassuring, he proceeded to hold me up – I am stubborn, true, and I have never been overwhelmed by nerves, but I wanted to score.

“The words last Saturday served to give me additional peace of mind. And they were said by a Coach of his standing.”
