After finishing the season with Coppa Italia glory, Marek Hamsik is confident that Napoli can push on to enter the 2012-13 title race.
The Slovakian scored in the 2-0 final win over Juventus in May to win the Italian Cup, but as well as seeing it as a fine way to have ended last season, he also sees it as a reason to push the team further ahead.
“Winning the Coppa was a fantastic moment,” he wrote on his official website on Thursday.
“It was a moment for the history of the club, because it was the first after 23 years. I’m glad we got the trophy, it was worth the wait. It’s given great satisfaction for our fans who have supported us throughout the season.
“I hope we can [challenge for the title next year]. President [Aurelio] De Laurentiis is great. In recent years he has invested heavily to bring in great players who have created this squad. Napoli doesn’t have financial problems because our President is well organised.”
On financial matters, Hamsik reflected on the relative weakness of Italy’s top flight to compete in the international transfer market.
“I think Serie A still has a lot of quality. Of course, we need to modernise stadiums. Then, there are serious problems such as late payments of wages. A player cannot go without being paid for three months. If such a thing happens, the club should have points deducted from the standings.”
