Roma new boy Clement Grenier says he is out to prove Lyon wrong and that the Giallorossi have what it takes to beat Juventus to the Scudetto.

Grenier has joined Roma on loan until the end of the season, at which point the Lupi can make the midfielder’s stay permanent for €3.5m, and – speaking at his official unveiling on Friday – the Frenchman also revealed Miralem Pjanic convinced him to make the move.

“I had serious injuries three years ago, plus two-and-a-half years ago,” he began.

“I also missed the World Cup in Brazil, but I’m fine now, and after all the injuries, they’ve given me the opportunity to become even stronger.

“When I came back, there was competition in midfield and I didn’t re-enter the Coach’s plans.

“I’ve never been given the real reason why, but I worked to be ready if an opportunity had presented itself.

“I also want to show Lyon that they were wrong about me and I want to prove to Roma that they did well to sign me.

“Furthermore, I’d also like to return to the national team and I know that this depends on Roma.

“They’re one of the best clubs in Europe and it wasn’t difficult to find an agreement with them.

“I’m 26 years old and I’ve joined this club at the perfect time to keep growing.

“Serie A is competitive and very tactical, Roma are close to Juventus and I hope we can overcome them.

“This team deserve to win trophies, we’re a great group with excellent potential. We can compete with [Juve], no doubt.

“I talked to Yanga Mbiwa and Pjanic, at which point I knew I was joining a big club.

“They spoke very highly about Roma and of Roma. Their words comforted me, Mapou told me a lot about the derby, he scored against Lazio and he’s very proud about it.”
