The FIGC President Gabriele Gravina has claimed he ‘can’t be the undertaker of football’ and will carry on his ‘responsibility to defend the movement’.
Serie A is pushing to get the green light from the government and the first step is to resume training sessions.
Gravina has highlighted his worries for the future of football if the campaign can not be concluded on the pitch.
“There are two currents of thought, the one where all the activity connected to the world of sport should be closed and the one that I carry, which is to continue,” he told Che tempo che fa. “I can’t be the undertaker of Italian football.
“I have a responsibility to defend the movement of football and the movement of sports.”
“We are not worried about stopping today, but we are worried because if football doesn’t resume, it has a negative impact on its future.
“I ask to be considered as a socio-economic impact movement for our country, on par with any other sector. I talked about June. I hope we will have the opportunity to experience a moment of relief in June, different from what we are experiencing now.”
But the FIGC chief has admitted that the government is of course entitled to stop football but is ‘convinced’ it will resume.
“That’s a responsibility I leave with them. I personally would welcome their choice with relief,” he added. “You can imagine the drama I’m experiencing to hold up this battle of mine.
“Italian football is not a monad that lives separately from the other categories of the country or international institutions. We are part of the European and world federations. But we have a feeling of hope too.
“There’s a procedure, we have sent a protocol to the Ministers [of Sport Vincenzo] Spadafora and [of Health Roberto] Speranza and now we await its validation.
“As regards tampons and tests, there are clinics organised to make themselves available and this can’t be the obstacle to not resume a movement like football.
“The team that scores the most points [will win the Scudetto]. I’m convinced we will start again.”
