Genoa have wasted no time in shooting down speculation that Alberto Gilardino could be set for a shock return to Fiorentina.

The striker only left the Viola for Marassi in January for €8m, but reports this morning claim he’s been requested by new boss Vincenzo Montella.

“The Gilardino to Fiorentina rumour is nonsense,” Rossoblu CEO Pietro Lo Monaco stated on Saturday evening.

“I’m not saying we would turn down a €20m bid for the player, but Alberto wants to stay with us and we want to keep him.”

The 29-year-old scored four goals in 14 games for the Grifone last term. He hit two in 12 for the Viola before his New Year switch.

“Gilardino’s goal average over the last few years shows us that he is one of the top five attackers in the League,” Lo Monaco continued.

“We have him in our squad, we’ll keep him in our squad and he’ll demonstrate his true worth.”

The 2006 World Cup winner has also been linked with a move to Ligue 2 outfit Monaco who are now bossed by Claudio Ranieri.
