Genoa striker Alberto Gilardino is hoping to appear for Italy at this summer’s European Championship.

“I hope to return to the international set-up soon,” the injured forward told Sky Sport Italia ahead of this evening’s Italy-America friendly at Marassi.

“The national team still gives me strong emotions and I want to feel those again as soon as possible. I’ll play my cards and then we’ll see what happens about Euro 2012.”

The January signing from Fiorentina has scored 17 goals in 47 caps for his country, but he hasn’t featured too heavily in the plans of boss Cesare Prandelli.

Gila, now 29, has played in just four games for his country since Prandelli replaced Marcello Lippi after South Africa 2010.

He scored in one of those ties, the 5-0 win over the Faroe Islands, but that has been his only strike in his last nine games for his country.

Gilardino has been sidelined in recent weeks with a thigh muscle strain, but could return for this weekend’s clash against Lecce.
