“I spent two wonderful years with Juventus,” the 28-year-old noted on his return to the peninsula for Wednesday’s friendly against Argentina, in honour of Pope Francesco.

“I went from Cesena to winning the championship with Juve, becoming a vice-champion of Europe with the national team and also playing the Confederations Cup in Brazil.

“Now I’m also being given the opportunity to meet the Pope…

“I was sorry to leave Juve, but there was this opportunity of joining Sunderland and together we decided it was a good thing for me.”

Sunderland’s shopping in Turin may not have ended with the versatile midfielder, seeing as Juve forward Fabio Quagliarella is also being linked with Paolo Di Canio’s side.

“I can only say that I am happy there,” Giaccherini commented. “Fabio will have to make his own decision.”
