Following the injury of Claudio Marchisio, a free-for-all race started among Italy's less prominent midfielders to replace him for the Azzurri.

Giaccherini scored for the Felsinei against the Rossoblu and many believe that a spot in the squad should be guaranteed for him.

“Well, I'm not 100 per cent certain, and I'd rather not jinx it,” he told Sky Sport. “Let's say that it's an objective.

“I hope I can make that dream come true, because I started from scratch when I came back to Italy and my main aim, after Bologna itself, was the national shirt. I can't deny that.”

Giaccherini was also asked whether Bologna could one day hope to emulate the campaign of underdogs Leicester City in the Premier League.

“That's a little bit difficult, as it would mean winning Serie A. But I think Bologna have a wonderful project. It's an important plan with an important club, and they can certainly raise their current level.

“My future? As of now, I'm very focused on the remaining three games. The transfer market responds to what we do during the week and during the matches. I'm happy here, where the environment proved to be very much to my liking.

“I'd like to stay, but we'll see what happens. Now the main thing is to end the season well.”
