Genoa have confirmed that they turned down the option to hire Luis Enrique before he moved to Roma in 2011.
“We didn’t go looking for him, but he was offered to us,” Genoa sporting director Stefano Capozucca told the Gazzetta Giallorossa.
“But there was no chance of him becoming our Coach because President Enrico Preziosi is not a lover of having foreign Coaches.”
Enrique quit Roma at the end of his first season in Italy, but his replacement Zdenek Zeman was recently sacked by the Giallorossi.
“I didn’t expect Zeman to be dismissed,” Capozucca continued ahead of this weekend’s meeting between the two sides. “I thought he’d end the season, but results do count.
“I think Roma’s squad is good enough to finish in the top four or five, they don’t deserve their current position [eighth].
“They’ve probably not been very fortunate with their choice of certain Coaches.”
