New Genoa boss Pasquale Marino has admitted that he’d like Fiorentina’s Alberto Gilardino at his disposal as soon as possible.

The two clubs are in talks regarding a January transfer for the striker and Marino is keen for terms to be finalised.

“I hope that the transfer takes place as I want him in the squad quickly,” the tactician, who replaced Alberto Malesani before Christmas, said on Thursday.

“We need a striker with the characteristics that he possesses.

“Other transfers? Before we make any other moves we’ll have to evaluate the players that we already have at our disposal.

“If there is a need to intervene in any area then the club won’t hold back.”

Genoa, who lost 6-1 in their final game of 2011, are currently joint ninth in the standings after an inconsistent campaign.

“I won’t set any targets or make any promises,” the former Parma and Udinese tactician continued. “I want to work hard and do the best we can.

“We have to give our best and the best for us will be qualifying for the Europa League.”

When asked about tactics, the new man refused to restrict himself to the use of one particular formation.

“I’ll look to field the players in the positions which are suited to their characteristics,” he added. “But games are not won because of a system of play.”
