“It is wonderful for me to come back to Palermo, a city where I spent almost five years as a player. All those memories are flooding back. I am not afraid, but rather eager to do good work.
“We must begin again from this squad, because it is a solid group made of positive lads, some more mature and others younger.
“This team needs enthusiasm and faith, not depression. I realise falling into despair can happen quite easily in cities where the fans are incredibly passionate about their side. As well as the result, what matters here is the integrity and their bond with the club.
“We must no longer be afraid, as we are fortunately still at the start of the season, so nothing is beyond repair.
“We need to focus on trying to find an identity without that crippling fear of making a mistake. We must find courage.”
Gasperini is famous for his 3-4-3 tactics, which is a radical change from Sannino’s 4-4-2.
“It is difficult to talk about systems right now. Obviously I’d prefer to use either a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2, but we must adapt to the movements required.
“We ought to be versatile so we can change with various situations or opponents we come up against.”
