Mauro Icardi’s hat-trick wasn’t enough for Inter in Florence in Week 33, as they were on the wrong end of a 5-4 thriller.

Both sides were looking to stay in the Europa League race, and all 22 players wore black armbands in memory of cyclist Michele Scarponi, who died on the morning of the race.

The Viola took the lead after 23 minutes, Matias Vecino smashing the ball in from close range, but the Nerazzurri took the lead with a quick fire double.

First Ivan Perisic and Antonio Candreva combined for the former to get his side on terms, before Mauro Icardi raced onto a Joao Mario through ball to put them ahead.

With Stefano Pioli’s side holding a 2-1 lead at the break, it looked like being a fairly comfortable evening, but Danilo D’Ambrosio gave away a daft penalty just after the restart.

However, Federico Bernardeschi mishit his Paneka style attempt and it dribbled weakly at Samir Handanovic.

The Tuscan side did grab an equaliser shortly after though, with Davide Astori heading home from a corner.

Inter appeared to lose all composure, and Vecino got his second of the game only moments later after a delightful back heel from Borja Valero.

Khouma Babacar stroked one into the corner to ensure the Nerazzurri conceded three in 18 minutes, before he got his second of the match to make it 5-2 with 11 minutes to play.

Icardi made it 5-3 with a sweet shot on the turn after 89 minutes, and the Argentine made the Artemio Franchi crowd sweat by reducing the arrears to 5-4 with a header in stoppages.

Fiorentina had Astori to thank for preserving all three points, as he cleared Marcelo Brozovic’s shot off the line in the dying seconds.
