Davide Calabria and Alexis Saelemaekers believe Milan should have been ‘more clinical’ against Cremonese and both say they conceded a ‘silly goal.’
The Rossoneri were held to a 1-1 draw by Serie A strugglers Cremonese on Wednesday and are now two points below a Champions League placement.
David Okereke scored the opener with barely 10 minutes remaining, but Junior Messias levelled the score with a free-kick shortly afterwards.
“We can’t concede a goal like that, we must be more focused in defence and be more clinical in attack. We lack goals. the build-up is ok, but we get there and we are struggling to find the net, from the first to the last player,” Calabria told DAZN looking really frustrated.
“Goals are the most important thing. Come on guys, we dominated and conceded a silly goal, but if you don’t score, you don’t win.”
Calabria’s teammate Saelemaekers agrees with his captain: “I think we had the right attitude in the first half, we created chances and we defended well,” he said.
“Then in the second half, we didn’t do what we had to, attack more and be fast up front. We conceded a silly goal. We take this point, which feels like a defeat.
“We had chances to score, not only the ball possession, but we need to be more clinical and we didn’t do it,” continued the Belgian winger.
“We watch every error with the coach after games, but every game is different, we are a bit disappointed because we didn’t do what we had to grab the three points.”
Stefano Pioli heavily rotated leaving Rafael Leao, Olivier Giroud, Sandro Tonali and Theo Hernandez on the bench. However, Saelemaekers believe the coach’s choice should not influence the team’s results and performances.
“We are all professionals, so we need to give our best whenever we play. It changes nothing we need to give our 100% when we are on the pitch, which is what we are doing.
“We want to do well in Serie A because we know it’s important, five games are remaining so we have a chance to grab points and do something good for next season.”
The Rossoneri host Lazio at San Siro in a key match for the top four on Saturday and will face city rivals Inter in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals on May 10. Pioli’s men are level on 58 points with Roma and Atalanta in the Serie A table, two below Inter.
