Diego Forlan and Diego Lugano claim Italy’s tactics are “perfect” for Uruguay and their forwards to take advantage.

The South Americans need a victory to continue in the World Cup, whereas the Azzurri can go through with a draw.

“We are the Italy of South America,” insisted defender Lugano in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We have the same origins and way of loving football. However, we took different paths in a tactical sense.

“Thanks to players like Andrea Pirlo, Thiago Motta and Marco Verratti, who in my view is destined to become a star, they have chosen to play possession football. That is better for us.

“We struggled against Costa Rica because they had 10 men sitting behind the ball. Italy, on the other hand, love to attack and take control of the game. That suits us.

“That way we can defend and then hit them on the counter-attack. It’s the perfect system for strikers like Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez to thrive against.”

Ex-Inter forward Forlan also gave his view on the Azzurri squad, most notably under-fire hitman Mario Balotelli.

“Mario is a great striker, but also someone who is rather inconsistent. He can invent a moment of magic out of nothing or just disappear from the game completely.”
