Fiorentina have released a statement responding to Zeljko Kalac’s claims their Serie A play-off with Perugia in 2004 was “fixed.”
The former goalkeeper made the allegations during an interview in Australia with Sports Fan Clubhouse.
“It’d be fair to say it was scandalous, the way we got knocked out. I’m going to say the game was fixed, because we could not cross the halfway line without the Ref pulling the game up.”
Fiorentina won that play-off 2-1 on aggregate despite having goalscorer Enrico Fantini sent off in the second leg.
The Tuscan club has now replied with an official statement.
“Following what was published in some media regarding Zeljko Kalac’s comments – referring to the Serie A play-off in 2003-04 – ACF Fiorentina announce the club is taking action to protect our reputation against anyone who would make damaging and false statements.”
