epa10896270 Fiorentina's Nicolas Gonzalez celebrates scoring the 1-0 goal during the Italian Serie A soccer match between ACF Fiorentina and Cagliari Calcio in Florence, Italy, 02 October 2023.

Fiorentina director Daniele Pradé reveals the club ‘turned down an offer worth almost €45m for Nico Gonzalez’ in the summer, reportedly from Brentford.

The centre-forward was all set to be part of the Argentina squad for the victorious 2022 World Cup in Qatar before pulling out through injury.

He has gone from strength to strength in Florence this season, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 11 games between Serie A and the Conference League.

There had been a proposal from the Premier League over the summer, believed by multiple sources to be from Brentford.

It was rumoured at the time to be circa €40m, but the statement from Pradé reveals it was even more impressive.

“Nico Gonzalez does not have a precise price-tag right now. The President turned down a lot of money for him, almost €45m.

“He is giving us a great deal and it is rare to find such a decisive player.”

The 25-year-old was rewarded with a new and improved contract to June 2028.
