Milan CEO Marco Fassone says the decision to fire Vincenzo Montella was down to sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli, who “has his ideas and convictions”.

The pair presented a united front in declaring that new Coach Gennaro Gattuso isn’t a caretaker, but in an interview with Sky, Fassone seemed keen to make it clear that decisions affecting the team are down to the DS.

“When you make these decisions you never enjoy it,” CEO Fassone said.

“It was a necessary decision, a painful one to make. There are moments in football where you have to make decisions, rather than waiting for things to improve.

“Which match was decisive? There wasn’t one in particular. Mirabelli is in charge of the technical side, the DS has his convictions and beliefs. We were expecting a spark, but it didn’t arrive.

“Right now we’re not even on 1.5 points average, we think it was the best choice. For Montella too.

“Montella did all he could, we didn’t succeed but we know what didn’t work.

“I talk to the owners every day, they’re an international ownership and they want the team to do well. They often complained to me.

“Mirabelli gradually realised that something had broken.

“We’re all agreed on the quality of the squad. It’s not worthy of the Scudetto, but the Champions League.

“There have been mistakes, some things didn’t work and I’m sure we’ll be back on our path on Sunday.”
