The former Roma, Juventus, Milan, Fiorentina and Liverpool player is experiencing a golden moment in the autumn of his career.
Firm in first place in his new league in Portugal, he was able to look back and comment on Serie A teams like Juventus and Fiorentina.
“Juventus are back in the race and they'll stay in it till the end,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Fiorentina? Everybody here asks me what I think of Paulo Sousa.
“The Portuguese school of coaching is really competitive. Tactically speaking, they're extremely well-prepared.
“Sousa is doing some great things. He was smart to continue the work of [former Coach] Vincenzo Montella and brilliant in adding his own characteristics.”
The 31-year-old then discussed his own personal situation and that of Stephan El Shaarawy, who was frozen by Monaco in their squad-list and now needs to find another team very quickly.
“I'm fine here, in fact more than fine here. I have everybody's respect and I play for the title.
“But the January transfer window is very particular, dynamic, fast and unpredictable. Scenarios which you never even imagined could still open up.
“As for El Shaarawy, I was in a very similar situation [with Milan]. I too needed to play only one more game for my purchase to become compulsory, but I got injured and then I barely played for months.
“But [joint-CEO Adriano] Galliani was honest at the time, and maybe that's the main difference. He told me that their economic situation wasn't too brilliant and that they didn't mean to sign me.”
Finally, Aquilani had a nod for Azzurri Coach Antonio Conte and Euro 2016.
“Why not? If Conte wants a tried-and-tested player he knows where I am. I scored three goals in the last six games, five so far.
“I'm playing and I'm in a good condition. I know this championship is harder to follow, but I can assure him of this: I'm available.”
