Southampton now lead the group after their 3-0 victory over Sparta Prague.
The Nerazzurri got their first win of the season at the weekend, a Mauro Icardi brace overturning Pescara in stoppages, but Frank de Boer had a reduced squad for the Europa League. Due to Financial Fair Play considerations, Joao Mario, Stevan Jovetic, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Gabigol are not on the UEFA list, while Ivan Perisic was injured. Hapoel Beer-Sheva won the Israeli title for the first time in 40 years and very nearly knocked out Celtic in the Champions League preliminary round, but missed Roei Gordana, Mohamed Ghadir and above all forward Elyaniv Barda.
The hosts unveiled their new third choice kit for the first time this season, a blue and neon yellow ensemble.
It was almost an early lead for the Israelis after six minutes, as Anthony Nwakaeme whipped in a cross from the left that Maor Buzaglo slid on to, but couldn’t steer on target.
Moments later Lucio Maranhao was allowed a totally free header between the two centre-backs, somehow nodding Buzaglo’s cross wide.
Eder turned a diving header wide and then wasted a promising opportunity when attempting one too many dummies in the box.
Inter started to take control of the game, but were almost caught out on the counter and Samir Handanovic needed a great point-blank save on Lucio Maranhao at the near post.
Jonathan Biabiany also sprinted back for a crucial defensive tackle as Korhut was pulling the trigger.
Eder came very close to giving Inter the lead on 39 minutes when he managed to control a cross from the left and turn undisturbed, but his powerful rising strike smashed against the upright.
Ever Banega replaced Marcelo Brozovic for the second half. Eder drilled just wide and Palacio was furious when hauled down by Miguel Vitor on the edge of the box, but the referee gave the free kick against him.
Incredibly, it was Hapoel Beer-Sheva who took the lead at San Siro. A free kick was taken short down the right to Lucio Maranhao in acres of space and his low cross went past everyone for Miguel Vitor to tap in at the back post.
Banega’s free kick was wide of the near stick, but Handanovic needed his trailing leg to deny Lucio Maranhao a second from point-blank range after dribbling past Danilo D’Ambrosio and then Nwakaeme drilled just wide.
Handanovic was rooted to the spot when he watched a Hoban snapshot scrape a coat of paint off the upright, as Hapoel were pouring forward.
It was not even much of a surprise when the Israeli’s doubled their lead at the Scala del Calcio, Buzaglo curling a splendid free kick under the bar that left Handanovic stranded.
Inter poured forward with a series of corners, but it was Hapoel who came closest to scoring again late on with Ben Bitton skipping past Jeison Murillo for a curler on to the crossbar.
Candreva forced a save with his ferocious free kick, but the jeers rained down at the final whistle.
