Deputy Italian Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio wants to ban betting advertisements. “I couldn’t care less about a club that spent €400m for Cristiano Ronaldo.”

The proposed law would prohibit betting companies from acting as sponsors on sporting events or for teams.

Naturally, the world of sport is complaining that this would cost them huge amounts of revenue, including Juventus.

“Why should someone come and tell me I can’t ban betting advertising? Because there’s a club that spent €400m on Cristiano Ronaldo?

“With all due respect, I couldn’t care less. I abolish the advertisement of betting companies because gambling is destroying families.”

Ronaldo's €100m transfer, and his €30m per year salary, has turned into a political hot-button issue, with unions of FIAT workers calling a strike in protest.

FIAT are owned by the same company as Juventus and this huge expenditure on one man rankled with an industry subject to recent lay-offs.
