Italy Under-21 Coach Gigi Di Biagio warns Serbia are “brilliant but inconsistent, so we must strike at the right moment.”
The Azzurrini go head-to-head with Serbia in a European Under-21 Championship qualifier on Tuesday. It kicks off at 16.00 GMT in Gornji Milanovac.
Italy are currently second in Group 9 with nine points from four games, whereas Serbia have seven. Belgium are top with 13 points from six games.
“I always believed and said that Serbia are the strongest team in the group,” insisted Di Biagio.
“They have experience, players who are in the Champions League and four players who have come directly from the senior squad.
“However, we are in good shape. We will play, as always, to win. Traditionally these teams are brilliant, but inconsistent. We must strike at the right moment.”
A passionate atmosphere is expected at the FK Metalac stadium, even though the temperature will be very cold indeed.
“It’ll be good for the lads and an opportunity to gain experience,” continued Di Biagio.
“I will tell them to enjoy this match. After all, we knew this was going to be a tough group, perhaps the only one where any of three teams could arrive first or third.
“There is an evident gap between us and Belgium and Serbia in terms of games per season played, but we can improve a great deal. This gives me hope.”
