Luca Di Bartolomei speaks out against guns, 24 years after his father, Roma legend Agostino, shot himself through the heart.

The former midfielder killed himself ten years to the day after the Giallorossi had lost the European Cup final to Liverpool, and is perhaps second only to Francesco Totti in the pantheon of Roma heroes.

“This is a Smith & Wesson 38 special, the same as the one Agostino had,” Luca Di Bartolomei wrote on his Twitter feed.

“When he bought it in the 70s, he did so because the thought it would keep his family safe.

“To the 41 per cent of Italians today would like to buy a weapon simply to feel more protected, I’d like to tell you that the data and studies show that having more guns around will only lead to more deaths, more suicides, more accidents.

“To those who object by saying that those who want to commit suicide would do it anyway, I saw it only takes a moment to cross that gap that we think we have in front of us and in that moment not having access to a weapon can make all the difference.

“That’s not a victim saying that, it’s all the available studies. Think of your children and your grandchildren, a gun provides no security.

“Believe me.”
