Mattia Destro celebrated his debut senior Italy goal and is “open” to playing in various different positions.
“It was hugely satisfying, especially as I was unable to score with the two chances I had in Bulgaria. I’m very happy,” he said after the 2-0 win over Malta.
“Playing with certain teammates means you always feel that you can score at any moment and be given that opportunity.
“We played against a very defensive side that stayed solid at the back and it was difficult to penetrate their defences. We tried to keep possession and pass it around to find some space.
“I have to compliment Malta, who played a great game in terms of defence and made it difficult for us.”
Destro played in different roles, as he went wide right in the second half when the Azzurri switched to a 4-3-3 system.
“I adapt and am at the absolute disposal of the squad. I’m happy to play on the right, as I’m young and it can only be positive to learn new roles. I give it my all.
“With Roma I am so far playing wide right, then I don’t know what will happen in the future. You’d have to ask Zdenek Zeman.”
Destro made the most of his chance, so hopes he has earned himself another call-up to the Azzurri.
“There are great players in the Nazionale, so everyone has to work hard and prove themselves to the Coach in training as well as the matches.”
There was one final comment regarding his personal grooming style.
“Everyone told me to shave my beard this week, but I forgot to bring a razor!”
