The ‘problems’ are the trial for match-fixing that at first saw Parma docked five points, revoked on appeal, with striker Emanuele Calaiò given a four-month ban for sending a jokey text to an opponent.
“The trial slowed everything down and it wasn’t easy to work in those conditions. Up until a week ago, we still had doubts as to whether we’d have a points penalty.”
D’Aversa was appointed in December 2016 and helped them recover from bankruptcy in 2015 to clamber all the way from the amateur league to Serie A.
Parma will make their debut this evening against Udinese at the Stadio Tardini, returning to the top flight after an all-time record three consecutive promotions.
“I am above all curious to see how the game goes. Some players arrived at the last minute and aren’t ready yet. It’ll certainly be a memorable occasion, but the memory we really want is the victory.
“It’ll be different for us, as the fans were getting accustomed to good results in Lega Pro and Serie B, but Serie A is a very different level. We’re no longer among the favourites and must try not to waste the miraculous achievements of the last three years.
“The mistake we really mustn’t make is to think about the past. We have to focus on the present and opponents like Udinese.”
