Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis has stated that the club initially wanted to sign Leandro Damiao rather than Gonzalo Higuain.
After selling Edinson Cavani to Paris Saint-Germain for €64.5m, the Azzurri turned their attention to the Brazil and Internacional striker.
“At the start we were talking to Damiao, but we were unable to come to an agreement with his agent,” the movie mogul told Canale 21.
“As a result, we then decided to contact Real Madrid for Higuain and we immediately found an agreement.”
The Argentine international has started his career at the Stadio San Paolo well thanks to four goals in five games so far for the Azzurri.
Higuain cost the Italian outfit €37.5m.
