The COVID-19 pandemic continues to recede in Italy, as there were 78 deaths over the last 24 hours – 22 of them in Lombardy – and the active cases dropped by 2,358.

For the third day running, the number of deaths fell below 100, as there were 78 since yesterday, taking the total to 32,955.
Just 78 deaths is the lowest figure since March 2.

The good news is that only 397 new positive cases have been identified, out of 57,674 tests (0.69 per cent).
As of May 26, just 521 remain in ICU (-20) and 7,917 are hospitalised with symptoms (-268).
There are 44,504 people self-isolating at home with minor symptoms, a reduction of 2,070.
Lombardy was the original epicentre and it remains a statistical outlier, as the virus has been almost eradicated in other regions.
Over the last 24 hours, there were 22 deaths in Lombardy related to coronavirus.
Another 13 left intensive care, 99 were released from hospital and out of 9,176 swabs, only 159 new positive cases.
The number of overall active cases in Lombardy fell by 738 to 24,477.
All of the regions except for Lombardy (159), Piedmont (86) and Liguria (53) registered under 25 new cases over the last 24 hours.
There were zero new positive tests in Bolzano, Sardinia, Calabria, Molise and Basilicata.
