Eugenio Corini revealed Cyril Thereau was not meant to take Chievo’s penalty in the 3-0 defeat to Milan.
Thereau took the spot-kick in stoppages and blasted it on to the crossbar, infuriating teammate Alberto Paloschi.
“I make a list of three penalty takers from the starting XI and Paloschi was the first choice,” confessed the Coach on Sky Sport Italia.
“There was a small debate on the field, but yes, Paloschi was supposed to take it. Thereau had a great season up until the game with Inter, then lost his form and started to become desperate for a goal. He needs to find his calm again.”
The Flying Donkeys hammered Bologna 3-0 on Wednesday night, but seemed a shadow of that side at San Siro.
“We’ve got to put this into context. On Wednesday that was a decisive game for our season, so we put a lot into it physically and psychologically.
“We are unaccustomed to playing three games in eight days, whereas Milan are better equipped to recover quickly.
“Plus we conceded a goal after four minutes, so it was an uphill struggle straight away and we were unable to react. Milan were highly motivated and have so much quality.
“Luca Rigoni is a very important player on a tactical level, so with him suspended, Roberto Guana and Calello injured, I only had a few midfielders available to me.
“I preferred to rest one of them, playing Simone Bentivoglio in front of the defence to bring a little more quality to that area. Milan allowed us to play, but every time they went on the counter it caused problems.”
