There were two controversial incidents that decided the match, as in the build-up to the goal, Pavoletti was down injured when caught in the face by Medhi Benatia’s elbow, but the referee waved play on and Douglas Costa rolled across for Bernardeschi to tap in.
Moments later, Cagliari had a strong penalty appeal waved away, as Bernardeschi appeared to charge down a Simone Padoin cross, but the referee and VAR officials – via a silent check in the booth – opted against the spot-kick.
