Cagliari captain Daniele Conti launched a scathing attack on President Massimo Cellino and his “offensive” comments on Leeds.

Cellino got the go-ahead this week to buy 75 per cent of Leeds United and has said they were “like a Ferrari after driving a Fiat 500,” referring to the Sardinians.

“I don’t like someone saying some teams are like a Ferrari and here it’s like driving a Fiat 500,” snapped Conti on Sky Sport Italia.

“I am proud to have been driving this 500 for many years. This little car has been stable in Serie A for 11 years.

“Some phrases certainly irritated us. There ought to be more respect for the players. These are phrases that hurt football. We do feel offended.”

Conti was asked whether he could reconsider his future at Cagliari if Cellino walks away, or pours all his funds into Leeds instead.

“It’s still early to say, we’ll talk about it later on. Would I go to Leeds? Absolutely not.”

Cellino was in the stands of the Stadio Sant’Elia this afternoon, watching Cagliari’s 3-1 defeat to Roma, but the local ultras staged a protest against the President.
