Club Brugge coach Ronny Deila discussed the qualities of new Inter signing Tajon Buchanan and underlined where the Canadian still needs to improve.

The 24-year-old midfielder has now officially joined the Nerazzurri from the Belgian side in a deal worth around €7m plus €3m in add-ons, penning a four-and-a-half-year contract worth around €1.5m net per season.

Buchanan is expected to add another option to the right wing back role in Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 system, providing an alternative to Denzel Dumfries. He will become the first Canadian to ever feature in Serie A.

Speaking in an interview with TMW, Deila first discussed the qualities of Buchanan.

“Tajon is first of all a calm boy and a good person. On the pitch, however, we are talking about a footballer with great speed and resilience, who can run up and down the pitch without ever getting tired.”

He was asked which role the Canadian would slot in best in Inzaghi’s squad.

“The best position to enhance his characteristics is that of right wing back in a five-man midfield. This is where Buchanan, in my opinion, can offer the highest performance.”

The Club Brugge coach touched on where the 24-year-old still needs to improve.

“The defensive phase. Defensively, Tajon is good one-on-one, but he has to work on his positioning in a back four.”

He highlighted some of Buchanan’s best aspects on the pitch.

“Buchanan knows how to run very well carrying the ball, he systematically gets to the goal and in every game, he provides lots of crosses to his teammates. You will see it too, he is a real pendulum.”

Finally, Delia was asked if he thought Buchanan could become a starter at Inter.

“Yes, but he still needs to develop technically to express his full potential.”
