Thibaut Courtois kept out Blaise Matuidi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but was beaten by an Edinson Cavani free header.
Ibra’s strike was parried and an Ezequiel Lavezzi follow-up desperately blocked by Cesar Azpilicueta, while Courtois fingertipped an Ibrahimovic header over the bar and Cavani’s angled drive skimmed the far post.
In the final minutes Javier Pastore had penalty appeals and Courtois again came to the rescue on Ibrahimovic.
In the other tie, Bayern Munich were held to a surprise 0-0 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk.
There were few real scoring opportunities, as Pep Guardiola’s men dominated possession without making much of an impact.
Bayern also went down to 10 men at the 66th minute when Xabi Alonso foolishly received a second yellow card.
The action continues tomorrow with Schalke-Real Madrid and Basel-Porto.
