The chaos erupted after Lazio had three players test positive in a Rome laboratory, yet they were given the all-clear by a lab in Avellino.
These same players – Immobile, Lucas Leiva and Thomas Strakosha – were allowed to play in Serie A against Torino in-between two Champions League matches where they were banned from participating due to their COVID results.
Now Il Tempo reporter Alessandro Austini claims results from the molecular tests (not the less accurate rapid response tests) for Roma striker Dzeko and Lazio forward Immobile have an identical viral load.
Despite that, Immobile could be given the all-clear to play against Juventus on Sunday, whereas Dzeko is in self-isolation.
La Gazzetta dello Sport notes that the Lega Serie A is moving ahead with plans to create a centralised system so all clubs test their players in the same laboratory.
They hope this way to create uniformity in the testing system, although that doesn’t even begin to address the differences in parameters and interpretation of the test between Serie A and UEFA.
The main issue is that the UEFA tests look for three genes, whereas Serie A only seeks two, as the N molecule is not linked to whether someone is infectious.
