Edinson Cavani said Uruguay “go home with our heads held high” after defeat to Colombia and defended Luis Suarez.
La Celeste were beaten 2-0 in Rio de Janeiro this evening and crashed out of the World Cup.
“It’s not that we didn’t play well. It was just a different performance to the games against England and Italy,” the PSG striker told Sky Sport Italia.
“This team gave its all and we look each other in the eye in that locker room, because we are a very united group.
“We go home, but with our heads held high.”
Yet Uruguay’s campaign has been beset by controversy, as Suarez received a four-month ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder.
“It was a real blow for us to lose Luis, but you can’t do anything against video evidence,” shrugged Cavani.
“I think the decision was too severe for him, for his career and for this squad. But it’s not just one player out there. It’s a team ad today we tried to implement what we’d prepared for this game.”
