The club captain has been dropped from the side following the arrival of new boss Rafael Benitez at the Stadio San Paolo.
“Only Benitez knows if Paolo will play as a starter,” Enrico Fedele told Radio Kiss Kiss on Monday afternoon.
“The past matters for nothing, now the player just needs to prove his worth – all other discussions can wait until the end of the season.
“Benitez has made an initial centre-back choice of Albiol and Britos, but I’m certain that Cannavaro will give the Coach something to think about.”
Cannavaro was a key figure in the three-man defence of previous boss Walter Mazzarri. Benitez instead plays with a flat back-four.
The 32-year-old, younger brother of Italy legend Fabio, joined the Azzurri for the second time in his career during the summer of 2006.
