Fabio Cannavaro doesn’t want to see the likes of Daniele De Rossi and Gigi Buffon called by Italy – “certain choices didn’t work at the 2010 World Cup…”
The Azzurri failed to qualify for this summer’s tournament, heralding the international retirements of Buffon, De Rossi, Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli.
Interim CT Luigi Di Biagio will call Buffon and Chiellini for the March friendlies, but Cannavaro would prefer to see the national team move on.

“I think that the conditions for a revival are still missing,” the World Cup winner told Gazzetta dello Sport’s Extra Time supplement.
“To still hear talk about call-ups for the senators doesn’t seem like the right path to me. I’m tied to Gigi Buffon or Daniele De Rossi more than anyone by that unrepeatable experience in Germany in 2006.
“But we know that certain choices already didn’t work at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and that experience should teach us something.”
Cannavaro is now Coach of Guangzhou Evergrande, and tried to sign Roma’s Radja Nainggolan in January.
“The negotiations weren’t simple. I admit there’s a bit of regret. Radja is an extraordinary, complete player that I could have used as an Asian in the Champions League because of his Indonesian origins.”
