Cagliari have officially expanded the Stadio Sant’Elia to 12,000 seats after a deal with the local council.
The stadium has been in disrepair for several years, as the club had abandoned it to play their home games in Trieste or in the Is Arenas.
When it was re-opened, safety concerns meant only 5,000 people were allowed in at any one time.
This evening Cagliari President Tommaso Giulini announced the venue would be able to hold 12,000 fans this season.
The club and council will continue to work on expanding it further, as the stadium undergoes more reconstruction work.
One of the main reasons former Cagliari President Massimo Cellino gave for leaving the club after 20 years was the inability to fix the stadium problem.
