Italy will not have the chance to possibly replicate their World Cup victory in 2006 this summer, and Buffon compared the disappointment of not making Russia to the euphoria of conquering Germany.

“The national team didn’t have the strength to give a dream to those who supported them,” the veteran goalkeeper told So Foot.

“Our children won’t be able to live the World Cup experience to the fullest because they’ve been deprived of it by people who represent, in the eyes of the whole world, their dreams, as well as the dreams of all of us Italians.

“From this experience, we’ll start over, with more conviction than before, while being even more aware of the importance of dreams and values.

“Winning the World Cup in 2006? It was a victory that represented the dream of 60 million people, of individuals, 60 million children, who rediscovered time without dimension, joy without interruption and positive feelings that became a means of expression and social cohesion.”
