Cristian Brocchi’s career could be over and his agent is pinning the blame on former Lazio teammate Francelino Matuzalem.

Brocchi was hacked down by a crunching Matuzalem tackle during Genoa’s 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon and the 37-year-old will require surgery for dislocated bones in his foot.

“Clearly we are very disappointed and I hope after the operation we’ll know whether he can continue playing,” agent Davide Lippi told TMW.

“There is anger and disappointment also about Matuzalem’s tackle. Seeing it again and again, it really is an unnecessary challenge and an ugly gesture I would never have expected from a champion like Matuzalem.”

Brazilian midfielder Matuzalem was Brocchi’s teammate at Lazio until last month and has also been bitterly criticised by another ex-Biancocelesti midfielder.

Roberto Baronio was highly critical of the challenge on Twitter, particularly of his refusal to apologise afterwards, but Matuzalem threatened legal action against Baronio.
