The midfielder surprised many when he decided to quit playing for his country after a splendid 2010 World Cup campaign, aged just 24.

“While I was at Borussia Dortmund, I could divide my time,” he told Vanity Fair.

“However, with Milan I play in Serie A, the Champions League and Coppa Italia, so I can’t do it anymore.

“My knee was injured six times and has undergone six operations. Even flying in a plane hurts because of the change of pressure. Therefore, I had to say goodbye to Ghana because I care about my health.”

Boateng also commented on Milan President and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

“I met him twice. You don’t expect a President to give you a pat on the back, but he really is a good man and very playful.”
