Lega Serie A President Maurizio Beretta said Claudio Lotito wasn’t entirely wrong when saying he “decides nothing.”
The comment was captured in a leaked phone call, released by Ischia director general Pino Iodice.
“What President Lotito explained in a bit of a reductive manner is in fact how things really are,” replied Beretta to Tuttomercatoweb.
“The decisions by the Lega Serie A are all made by the clubs themselves with a vote during meetings, as set by the statute.
“The President only acts as a guarantor that the rules are being followed and is their representative. The decisions are down to the clubs.
“Am I irritated by his words? I look at substance more than surface, then there are ways of expressing oneself that are more or less amusing.
“We are talking about a private phone call and I don’t think there’s any reason to over-dramatise things. The substance of what he said is correct, even if he expressed it in a colourful manner.”
Beretta said the same goes for Lotito suggesting it would be a disaster if Carpi or Frosinone were promoted to Serie A.
“In sporting terms, of course it’s right to cheer on Carpi or Frosinone. President Lotito’s consideration was tied to the planned reform of the Leagues, reducing the number of clubs in the top flight.
“It would likely lead to having more consolidated clubs with sporting tradition and large fanbases.”
There are plans to reduce Serie A from 20 teams to 18, but there is resistance from the smaller sides.
