The Partenopei have been heavily linked with the Belgian midfielder in recent weeks, with the player out of favour at Old Trafford following a poor debut season with the Red Devils.
“We need to continue to work with these players and see if we can do something at the end or whether we will continue improving what we have,” Benitez said to Sky.
“Fellaini? He has a contract with Manchester United, so at the moment I’m thinking about improving our players.”
The former Valencia, Liverpool, Inter and Chelsea boss was then asked about the Azzurri’s unsuccessful attempts to sign Javier Mascherano from Barcelona.
“He had two years of contract, they know he is an important player. They spoke to him and made him feel very important.”
