Demetrio Albertini, the other FIGC candidate, said Carlo Tavecchio’s racist comment “speaks for itself.”

Tavecchio had been certain to win the vote on August 11, but has been embroiled in a race row.

“His phrase speaks for itself,” shrugged Albertini on Sky Sport Italia.

“He made life difficult for us on an international level. I think we need to set a good example.

“If we want to grow and speak to young people on and off the field, we need to set a good example.”

Tavecchio had been discussing the lack of a work permit system for non-EU players.

“We say that any old Opti Pobà can come here, before he was eating bananas, now he’s playing in the Lazio first XI,” said 71-year-old Tavecchio.

Fiorentina, Cesena and Sassuolo have withdrawn their support, but Lazio, Palermo and Cagliari remain behind him.

Other clubs have so far remained silent and are considering their position.
