Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis says “the city doesn’t invest” in the Stadio San Paolo.
The Partenopei patron has been repeatedly critical of the stadium, even describing it as a toilet, and said yesterday he was looking for land outside of the city.
“The municipality doesn’t allow us to invest in the stadium,” De Laurentiis said on Radio 24.
“Not even to repair those things which are necessary to make it functional. The Court of Auditors would never let us repay the money from the city, but the city doesn’t invest.
“The say they’ve taken out a loan with the Credito Sportivo, but in reality I’ve seen little use from this financing.
“The absurdity is that now there’s going to the the Universiade, with €200m of funding and they want to invest €4m to upgrade the athletics track.
“I say take it somewhere else though. My old project – which they didn’t even consider – was to bring the stadium to the touchlines.
“Imagine the impact that would have had…”
De Laurentiis was also asked how he’d handle Milan’s situation with Gianluigi Donnarumma, with reports he wants to leave the club.
“I’d have known beforehand. When [Ezequiel] Lavezzi came to me saying he wanted to leave, I said: ‘right now you stay calm, stay tranquil. You’re a Napoli player, stay for another year and if I manage to place you somewhere which suits you – for the right price – then you can leave. Otherwise you’ll stay at Napoli’.”
