Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi has undergone surgery to remove a tumour, confirmed the club.

A statement released by the medical staff noted that an ECG scan showed up a ‘neo-formation’ in the genital area that required surgery.

The operation was completed on Wednesday and the 25-year-old player is now recovering, having been released from hospital the next day.

The statement does not include information on the size of the tumour, or if it was benign.

Acerbi only joined newly-promoted Sassuolo earlier this month from Genoa, having spent periods on loan at Milan and Chievo over the past year.
