Juventus picked up their first loss under Thiago Motta on Tuesday night, falling to a 1-0 defeat at home against VfB Stuttgart in the Champions League, which La Gazzetta dello Sport labelled a ‘deserved’ victory for the Bundesliga outfit.

Juventus were dealt a reality check at the Allianz Stadium as El-Bilal Toure finally broke the deadlock in the third minute of second-half injury time.

Danilo had been sent off 10 minutes earlier, but the visitors had registered 10 shots on target compared to Juve’s one, and also had a penalty saved by Mattia Perin to keep the scores at 0-0 earlier on.

What was surprising about Juventus’s loss to Stuttgart

What La Gazzetta dello Sport found unusual about Juventus’s loss was not the fact that they failed to score; Stuttgart was the fourth game this season Juventus haven’t found the net. What was surprising was the fact that they were unable to control the game, particularly in defensive phases.

The Bianconeri had not lost in any competition this season until Wednesday night, and will now have to dust themselves off again in order to face Inter in Serie A over the weekend, which will be a battle between the second and third highest ranked in the league.
