Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto wasted the chance to double Italy’s advantage against Ireland as he missed a penalty in a European U21 Championship qualifier at the Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste.

The Azzurrini’s captain failed to convert from the spot after the referee awarded a penalty kick due to Garcia McNulty’s foul on Roma’s Tommaso Baldanzi, who was the team’s hero in Italy U21’s win over Norway in September, when he scored a hat-trick.

Gnonto could’ve added to Cesare Casadei’s advantage but provided Ireland with a lifeline they eventually took advantage of, as they equalised in the second half through Moran’s goal.

The Leeds United forward scored two goals and provided four assists during his side’s start to the season in nine Championship games.
