Former Italy international Domenico Berardi has marked his long-awaited return to action for Sassuolo in a thumping 6-1 victory over Cittadella in Serie B, having been kept out of action since mid-way through the 2023-24 campaign.

Berardi back in Serie B action after seven-month injury lay-off

The 30-year-old came off the bench after 73 minutes to see the final quarter of an hour out against the second division strugglers. The Neroverdi had just scored their fifth of the game at the time of Berardi’s introduction.

It marks a return after seven months for Berardi, who picked up a serious achilles injury against Hellas Verona in Serie A back on March 3.

He was not able to help his team as they slipped to relegation after an 11-year stay in the top flight.

His injury also meant that no top-flight team fancied a punt during the summer transfer window. For now, until January at a minimum, he will stay in Serie B to help Sassuolo push for promotion.

After Saturday’s 6-1 win, Fabio Grosso’s side currently sit third in the Serie B table with 15 points from eight matches. They are one off Spezia in the automatic spots, and four off Pisa at the top.
