Luciano Spalletti insists the big difference between Italy and Spain was that ‘they were sharper and much quicker’ both mentally and physically.

The coach had said his plan was to take the initiative away from La Roja, but that was nowhere to be seen as they managed just 40 per cent possession and zero shots on target in a 1-0 defeat.

Instead, the Azzurri barely managed to string three passes together at a time, with Gianluigi Donnarumma making two big saves, Nico Williams hitting the crossbar and Riccardo Calafiori scoring an unlucky own goal.

“I was not disappointed as such, but it was clear from the start they were much sharper than us. If you don’t react at the same speed, it all becomes more difficult,” Spalletti told Sky Sport Italia.

“When it’s Spain who have this ability to target you quickly, it becomes doubly difficult. It is a simple analysis, they were quicker than us in their choices, in their pressing, in working together and it all comes down to the fact we weren’t as sharp as them.

“When the legs don’t move and you don’t have the right distances between players, character can only take you so far. We were always stretched out and every time we won the ball back, we lost it again.

“Our choices were not precise, our reaction was always a bit lacking in logic.”

Spalletti needs only a point

All is not lost, as though Spain are through to the Round of 16 as group winners, a point against Croatia would be sufficient to guarantee second place for Italy.

This is because even if Albania beat Spain in the other match, the Nazionale have a superior head-to-head record.

“We need to recover, be capable of reasoning the right way on the situations we saw today. At times we could’ve made different tactical decisions and kept the team tighter, but they were moving far quicker than us, reacting far quicker. The difference was too clear,” continued Spalletti.

Is it purely a physical issue that Italy lack sharpness compared to Spain, who only made one change from their opening game?

“I consider it to be a physical situation, as psychologically we were in good shape, coming off a good performance. We were up against a team that plays good football and we should’ve showed we were just as good on the ball, but instead they were much more reactive. That is what caused the problems.”

Italy went behind after 23 seconds against Albania and Donnarumma had to make a save after 90 seconds, so Spalletti was asked why do they start so badly?

“As time goes on, you start to lose your shape, lose sight of why you were making those decisions. Jorginho, Barella and others are good at making those choices, but we were probably struggling to defend because we made that attempt to control the game and have the same possession as Spain. We didn’t manage it and that made everything more difficult.”

  1. It’s a structural, corporate, and governance problem in Italy as the stadium functionality in Italy is second rate, at best. Also, this is a natural CONSEQUENCE when so few Italian players are given the chance to compete in senior Seria A clubs. This inherently limits the quantity and quality of opportunities available for Italian players to compete regularly.

    Seria A = VERGOGNIA!

  2. You @Spalleti must admit that your reading was very very poor.
Shame on you, fans was waiting on you to put a good performance instead Spain hammered Italy so so bad. If it was not for Donna, the score would be like 4-0 Spain. I am very very disappointed on you Spalleti to say the least.

  3. You don’t play Spain at their own game, they mastered it and Italy are nowhere near that level. Should’ve played to our strengths nullify their wingers, crowd out the midfield. Spalletti’s mention of taking the game to them didn’t exist at all. We should still beat Croatia and go through. Donnarumma saved us from an onslaught.

  4. This is the worded Italian players I have seen in a long time. No creativity in this team at allShame on Italian teams for not promoting young Italian players after all the young boys won the under 19 and 17 European championships in the last year, shame on the government not letting teams build new modern stadiums

  5. Terrible performance by Italy. Spain has better individual players to be sure but as a team they aren’t world beaters. This was no contest from go. So many mistakes which at this level is unacceptable and against a team like Spain is costly. Chiesa was a no show, without him there’s no chance for them in this tournament. What a waste of a talent. The Scamacca experiment is over, take him out and start Rategui. He’s not great either but he plays with intensity and runs. Scammacca was a statue out there. Not sure what else Spalletti can do, this team is what it is.

  6. Ya we are no longer a top footballing nation from what I saw . Spalletti tried to do what they did in 2012 final . With these players you can’t play them at their own game . Conte has the right approach in 2016 with even worse players

  7. All the more reason we need to invest in our youths. Our U17, U19, and U20 were champions, champions and 2nd place in their respective competitions. We need to play these guys at club and national levels, not let them rot away in lower divisions. We should be developing them now to make a strong run at the next world cup

  8. Spalletti was very disappointing and our weakest link tonight. Completely clueless. The system clearly wasn’t going to work. A two man midfield for Spain? Really? Chiesa on the right? Pellegrino on the left? Scamacca is not an international player. I feel for sorry for Retegui who has barely put a foot wrong for Italy. What I fear most is that the players don’t look like they believe in his tactics; they look drained by his ideas. I hope we go through but even so, Germany next round will be a disaster.

  9. Take it easy this is one game, lets call it a learning experience. They need a spark. If we were going to lose this was the right time. We have the best goalie. Keep the faith people.

  10. Simply put we need to stop with the antics and play.. it was one of the worst performances I have seen Italy play they looked scared.. very disappointed.. die hard fan

  11. everyone need to be relax. even before the match. spain was favorite to win this game. if someone think otherwise its either its underestimated spain or overestimated azzurri.
draw is probably the best result but azzurri still has good chance to qualify so its all good. spaletti and his squad need to learn from this match. and if they learn and progress from group stage they can go all the way. its early day and the more azzurri stay on tournament the squad gonna be more learn to his style. italy need take each match starting with croatia next, then we will see the next one. dont put too much pressure for them.

  12. Agree with Fabio and Mangia Cake… bad performance.. hit reset and we can do this one game at a time.
