Back in 2019, Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis had told the New York Times that clubs like Frosinone shouldn’t be in Serie A, but last night, the Ciociari beat the Partenopei 4-0 at the Stadio Maradona in Coppa Italia.
It was a historic night for Eusebio Di Francesco’s Gialloblù who had never reached the Coppa Italia Round of 16, let alone the quarter-finals.
They are among the most surprising Serie A teams of the season, with 19 points in 16 matches, and their incredible away win at the Stadio Maradona on Tuesday surely is the highlight of their campaign so far.
It also represents a little revenge on Napoli President De Laurentiis, who mentioned Frosinone as one of the small clubs negatively affecting Serie A’s competitiveness in an interview with The New York Times in 2019.
“Why should Frosinone have a season in Serie A, be given a slice of the pagnotta and then be relegated back to the third division?” ADL asked.
“If they cannot compete, if they finish last, they should have to pay a fine. They shouldn’t be given money for failing.”
This is Frosinone’s third-ever season in Serie A. The previous two times they were promoted to Italy’s top flight, they were relegated after just one season.
The Gialloblù hope 2023-24 ends differently and the early signs are promising as Di Francesco’s men are currently seven points above the drop zone.
The Gialloblu will meet Juventus or Salernitana in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.
