Jorginho has missed four consecutive penalties for Italy and La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Andrea Elefante believes the Arsenal midfielder ‘must stop’ taking spot kicks with the Azzurri.

Jorginho missed his fourth consecutive penalty kick for Italy on Friday, in a 5-2 win over North Macedonia at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Although Italy coach Luciano Spalletti has claimed Jorginho will continue taking penalties, Italian fans and media are discussing whether the Arsenal playmaker should be confirmed as the man in charge from the spot.

This is not the case according to La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist and Italy correspondent Andrea Elefante.

‘To persevere would be diabolical. Jorginho must stop taking penalty kicks, at least for Italy. Never again.’ the journalist wrote in an article published in Sunday’s printed edition of the pink paper on page 15.

Elefante detailed how Jorginho has converted 41 penalties from 49 across all competitions (84%), including club games. On the other hand, the Arsenal midfielder has become the Italian player with the most penalty kick attempts, eight, and the most errors from the spot, four, as many as Alessandro Altobelli.

Jorginho has scored six penalties from ten with Italy, missing the latest four attempts, including one in the penalty shootout against England in the Euro 2020 Final.

  1. It’s obvious he does not want to score for Italy, if he blasted the ball in it would go in but he placements are pathetic except for when he plays for Chelsea and Arsenal where he puts the effort in. Anyone can score but him. Bringing him back was a mistake do they use him for betting or something.
